Welcome to my blog. From next week on, on a weekly basis I will describe and demonstrate a dynamic,
multi-joint structural exercise that will improve paddling performance.
These exercises are relatively complicated, full body exercises. They will be performed with free weights, because training with free weights is
the most effective way of improving strength and power in athletes. If performed correctly and fit properly into your periodized training program, you will experience
a gradual increase in power, power endurance, explosive power, muscle speed,
coordination, proprioception, muscle pre-loading and motor unit recruitment, optimal sarcomere length (the smallest functional unit in the muscle fiber), optimal force-length and optimal force-velocity, balance and general and specific skills.
I will avoid technical
jargon as much as possible using my 25 yrs experience as an athletic trainer,
sprint kayak coach, strength and conditioning specialist and physical therapist
in teaching and coaching athletes.
I will progress from relatively easy to
learn exercises, such as Hang Cleans in the direction of more complicated ones
such as Jumping Power Cleans on Bosu.
For those who want to receive
individual instruction to make sure that they perform these exercises in a
technically correct manner, I will offer training sessions at our store during
the off season.
Those who are serious about their conditioning and want to embark
on a periodized training program, you can go to Larry Cain's website (www.larrycain.ca)and contact him regarding designing a personalized program. You will learn from Larry how to fit these
exercises into your annual training plan.
Jessica Rando of NuMe Fitness will offer an SUP Boot Camp starting January at
Kim Gym in Port Credit that will include some serious SUP specific strength
training. Jess also offers personal strength training sessions in the
PC/Mississauga/Oakville area for those who need individual
attention.
